On top of Westgate Oxford |
Each year, the new students on the MSc Real Estate take a walk around Oxford accompanied by the 'Oxford Property Market Questionnaire' - the purpose of which is to make them more familiar with the city centre and to equip them with the relevant information about the city that they need to construct a group presentation based on the property market in Oxford. And this year there is something new to think about...the effect of the new shopping centre: Westgate Oxford. Some thoughts from the media on:
visitor numbers
the plight of Westgate Social
the Westgate effect
what impact?
The students had a (brilliant) guided tour of Westgate Oxford, the completely refurbished (and rebuilt) shopping centre at the end of Queen Street. It looked so different from when we visited in 2014! Click on the red links to find out more about Westgate Oxford Alliance, the joint development between Landsec and The Crown Estate. For more information about the architects behind the design visit the Architects' Journal The students also visited The Clarendon Centre (the shopping centre located between Cornmarket and Queen Street) and Oxford Covered Market. I followed them round and took a few photos:
Starting off from Oxford Rail Station - due for redevelopment, but when? |
Walking towards Westgate Oxford |
Going in... |
...downstairs. |
Flagship store, John Lewis and what? |
This. |
By the entrance to the car park :) |
Westgate Social - downstairs street food area... |
...which often gets missed but is actually really good. |
Going up to the top... |
...the Roof Terrace. |
And the Curzon. |
They did leave eventually. |
The view down through the shopping centre (all three floors) |
Over the fake grass and passed all the restaurants on the top to... |
Right up at the top...Escape Hunt Oxford |
And Buzz Gym. |
The lift scene. |
How it used to be. Westgate Shopping Centre in 2014. |
The main entrance to Westgate Oxford is on Queen Street where buses move up and down...slowly. Watch your back. |
Over at The Clarendon Centre. |
And Oxford Covered Market. |
Finally - the view over Oxford from the top of Westgate Oxford. |
