MSc Real Estate: Sponsors' Day 2014

On September 23, Nick French (MSc Real Estate programme leader) organised a day for the MSc Real Estate students where the MSc sponsors were invited to give talks on a variety of subjects including sustainability, commercial investment, landlord and tenant, valuation and corporate real estate. The aim of the Sponsors' Day was to give the students an overview of the property industry and get them thinking about the different parts of the profession and how they fit together in the 'jigsaw of property'. The students could then start to think about how they might fit into the property industry and find their 'niche' after graduation (which seems such a long way off - at the moment).

The MSc Real Estate is sponsored by seven of the big players in the property industry: CBRE, Cluttons, DTZ, GVA, Jones Lang LaSalle, Knight Frank and Savills. The sponsors are there to support the MSc Real Estate through the contribution of their expertise, time and resources (not financial). Activities include hosting field trips, guest lectures, careers advice and sponsoring (supporting) events such as the MSc Sponsors' Day.

Nick French introducing the MSc Real Estate Sponsors' Day

The first presentation was given by Alastair Mant, Head of Sustainability at GVA. If you're interested in sustainability issues and how they are impacting on the property industry, follow him on Twitter: @greengingerGVA. He started with an interesting ice-breaker - the students (and staff) were asked to think about their favourite place and line up according to distance from where they were (Oxford) and then explain why...

The students lined up (by Alastair Mant) according to their favourite place and it's distance from Oxford:
Oxford                                                                                                                                                                    New Zealand

Alastair Mant talking about the 3 pillars of sustainable development: environment, society and economy.

Alastair got the students really thinking about 'sustainability' and the future challenges for the built environment by showing excerpts from the new film: DISRUPTION - watch the trailer below (or the whole film) and prepare to think about the future.

Alastair was followed by: Alasdair Vaux (CBRE) on Corporate Real Estate, Julian Sandbach (JLL) on  Landlord and Tenant, Mark Stebbings (Knight Frank) on Valuation and Marcus de Minckwitz (Savills) on Commercial Investment, making the property jigsaw (a bit more) complete.
