The postgraduate students (MSc Real Estate Management and MSc International Real Estate) visited Bicester Village and Milton Park
The first visit of the day was to Bicester Village - a designer outlet centre housing some 130 stores which encompass a wide range of product categories. It has become a major international tourist destination with over 3 million visits per year. Apart from shopping (built into the timetable obviously) the students attended a presentation and Q&A session about the Bicester Village development. The presentation was given by Chris Harris, Director of Value Retail and Executive Chairman of London & Metropolitan International Developments and also by Anna Keddie, Marketing Director for Value Retail, the company who manage the Bicester Village development. Value Retail specialises exclusively in the development and operation of luxury outlet shopping villages and aims to 'provide its guests with an outlet shopping experience unrivalled anywhere in the world'. They currently manage 9 shopping villages. For more information on the company and what they do, have a look at the Value Retail website.
After lunch and shopping it was on to Milton Park where shopping opportunities were minimal. Milton Park is located near Abingdon and is one of the UK's leading business estate and science parks. It provides office and laboratory space, industrial units and warehousing. The students were given a presentation about the current property market by Rick de Blaby, Chief Executive Officer of MEPC and an alumnus of Brookes. Have a look at a recent article about this subject written by MEPC for the Independent (23 February 2012). The last session of the day was a presentation on park management from Andrew Barlow, Commercial Director at MEPC.
